BYU Fundraising Guidelines

In February 2018 the Brigham Young University Board of Trustees, chaired by the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, announced new fundraising guidelines:

BYU may engage in fundraising for student financial aid, capital projects when directed by the board, and non-tithing-based activities, such as athletics.

Student financial aid includes scholarships, grants, fellowships, awards, loans, and financial support (including student wages where appropriate) for activities such as inspiring learning, experiential learning, mentored-learning experiences, teaching assistantships, student research, research assistantships, internships, study abroad, work study, and travel and participation in performing groups and competitions.

Fundraising at BYU is facilitated by Philanthropies, the Church’s fundraising department. “Our hope is for each donor to have an inspired giving experience that results in positive change,” says Tanise Chung-Hoon, managing director of Philanthropies. “Having clear guidelines helps people know where and how they can continue to make a difference. We’re excited to partner with BYU leaders as we keep working together to engage donors in a meaningful way.”

Donors have made and will continue to make a positive difference for students and the university, says President Worthen. “I love BYU, in part because it is greater than the sum of its parts. Donors make the university and the BYU experience better for our students.”
